Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming a Notary Public in Connecticut

Meet the Eligibility Requirements

Before applying to become a notary in Connecticut, ensure you meet the following requirements:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.

  • You must be a resident of Connecticut or have a principal place of business in Connecticut.

  • You must have no felony convictions or have had a felony conviction that was pardoned.

Complete the Application

  • Obtain the Application Form:

   Download the "Application for Appointment as a Notary Public" form from the Connecticut Secretary of the State's website.

  • Fill Out the Application:

   Complete all required fields in the application form, including your personal information and answers to eligibility questions.

 

  • Gather Supporting Documents:

   You may need to provide proof of your residency or business location in Connecticut.

Submit the Application and Pay the Fee

Mail the Application:

Send the completed application along with a check or money order for the application fee ($120) to the following address:

Make the check or money order payable to "Secretary of the State."

Take the Oath of Office

  • Receive Your Certificate:

Once your application is approved, you will receive a certificate of appointment from the Secretary of the State.

 

  • Take the Oath:

Within 30 days of receiving your certificate, take the oath of office before a Connecticut notary public.

File Your Oath and Certificate

File with the Town Clerk:

File your oath of office and the certificate with the town clerk in the town where you reside or have your principal place of business.

Obtain Notary Supplies

  • Purchase a Notary Seal and Journal:

  You will need a notary seal and a journal to record your notarial acts. These supplies can be purchased from various vendors.

  • Notary Manual:

  The Connecticut Notary Public Manual provides detailed information on the duties and responsibilities of a notary public in Connecticut.

 

Renewal:

Notary commissions in Connecticut are valid for five years. You will need to renew your commission before it expires by following a similar process.
